In 1999, Karen Comerford, a textile designer and illustrator with a background in product development, and Michael Hennessy, a furniture maker and musician, opened their shop, COMERFORD HENNESSY at HOME in Bridgehampton, New York as a laboratory of sorts, a place in which to experiment with new designs and merchandising ideas. In this refined space, they work to redefine the term "MODERN," stripping it of its implications of austerity and imbuing it with a comfortable, uncomplicated simplicity.
Their clean-lined private label furniture is the platform on which the esthetic of the shop is built. Sleek without being slick, strong but not overpowering, their hand crafted pieces anchor a collection of contemporary textiles, lighting, interior accessories, photographs and paintings. Color, texture and subtle pattern are combined throughout the store in a series of tableaux that are soothing, surprising, and elegant, while at the same time remaining completely comfortable.
